When is Chinese Teacher’s Day every year?
The development of human civilization is inseparable from the knowledge imparted by teachers. Teachers’ Day not only affirms the importance of the teaching profession, but also encourages teachers who work hard to promote education. In China, respecting teachers has been a tradition spanning over thousands of years.
Chinese Teacher’s Day in 2022 is September 10th (Friday) in the Gregorian calendar, which is the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar.
However, in the past, China had Teachers’ Day on other dates.
A quick history.
In 1931, educator Tai Shuangqiu (邰爽秋) and others issued a declaration on “Improving Teachers’ Treatment, Guaranteeing Teachers’ Work, and Improving Teachers’ Self-cultivation”, and requested that June 6 be designated as Teachers’ Day, also known as the Double Sixth Festival.
Later, Teachers’ Day was changed to Confucius’ birthday (27th of the eighth month in the lunar calendar), by the government at that time.
In 1951, the International Labor Day on May 1 was regarded as the Chinese Teacher’s Day. But due to the lack of the teachers’ characteristic of the Labor Day, the date was not ideal.
On March 1981, at the fourth meeting of the Fifth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, 17 CPPCC members of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy jointly submitted a proposal: a proposal to determine the date and content of the National Teacher’s Day.
In January 1985, the Premier of the State Council put forward a proposal to establish Teachers’ Day at the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed this proposal and designated September 10 as Teachers’ Day every year.
That is to say, in 1985, Teachers’ Day was changed again.
Specifically, on January 21, 1985, September 10 of each year was designated as Teachers’ Day.
Since then, Teachers’ Day is on September 10 every year.
On September 10, 1985, teachers across the country celebrated their first Teacher’s Day.
Officially, Teachers’ Day in 2022 is the 38th Teachers’ Day in China.
