Pictographic characters are very important part of Mandarin Chinese language. Without knowing these characters, it’s virtually impossible to properly understand Chinese language and culture. However, learning these characters is a long process. You need to select right study material and practice learning these characters on a regular basis. Let me introduce you to world of must-know simplified Chinese characters. These characters are frequently used in day-to-day communication among the Chinese people. Hence, they are very important for you to know.

Here is a list of paperback books on my Amazon homepage to learn Chinese characters (Affiliate disclosure). The characters are organized in the form of character search puzzles (similar to the word search puzzles). Each book contains over 100 puzzles. Each puzzle is a 9*9 grid, meaning they contain 81 characters. You need to find a given list of similar-looking characters in each puzzle. Pinyin and English interpretation of the characters in the list has been included for your reference. The books are suitable for HSK all level students.

  16. I am so glad to have discovered you (on Qora) because I am from Canada and go to China as often as I can as a guest artist. I took a few lessons in Mandarin and admit the sounds are difficult to hear and repeat but I have no exposure to writing and want to.

    I will start with your puzzle books. Is the idea to do all the 25 puzzle books BEFORE the Calligraphy books?

    1. Thanks, glad to know your interest in Mandarin Chinese.

      Learning to read and write Chinese characters is mutually interlinked.

      Since many Chinese characters look similar, writing character is an interesting way to remember character for a long term. That said, calligraphy is recommended for learning Chinese in a fun and relaxed way. All we need is to draw the characters.

      Solving puzzles requires looking at the characters very carefully to find the exact matches.

      When we learn reading and writing simultaneously, the learning effects would be long-lasting.

      Further, it’s not mandatory to do all 25 books before starting calligraphy as reading and writing should be done together.
