Who Was Du Fu?
Du Fu (杜甫, Dù Fǔ) is one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. He lived during the Tang Dynasty (唐朝, Táng Cháo), a period famous for producing many brilliant writers and poets.
While Li Bai (李白, Lǐ Bái) is often called the “Poet Immortal” (诗仙, shī xiān) because of his imagination and romantic spirit, Du Fu is known as the “Poet Sage” (诗圣, shī shèng) because of his deep concern for society, history, and ordinary people.
Chinese people often describe Du Fu as a poet who carried the worries of the world in his heart. His poems describe war, poverty, family separation, government problems, and the suffering of common people.
For Chinese learners, Du Fu’s poetry provides an important perspective on Chinese history. His poems are not only beautiful literary works but also valuable historical records.

Du Fu’s Early Life
Du Fu was born in 712 CE in Henan Province (河南, Hé Nán). He came from an educated family with a strong literary tradition.
From a young age, Du Fu studied classical texts and hoped to become a government official. Like many scholars of his time, he wanted to serve the country through his knowledge and abilities.
However, his life was not easy. He repeatedly failed important examinations and struggled to find a stable position. These personal difficulties helped him understand the challenges faced by ordinary people.
Unlike poets who lived comfortable lives at court, Du Fu experienced poverty, displacement, and hardship. These experiences greatly influenced his writing.
Example sentences:
杜甫年轻时努力学习。(Dù Fǔ nián qīng shí nǔ lì xué xí)- Du Fu studied hard when he was young.
他希望成为一名官员。(tā xī wàng chéng wéi yì míng guān yuán)- He hoped to become an official.
生活经历影响了他的诗歌。(shēng huó jīng lì yǐng xiǎng le tā de shī gē)- Life experiences influenced his poetry.
The An Lushan Rebellion and Historical Change
One of the most important events in Du Fu’s life was the An Lushan Rebellion (安史之乱, Ān Shǐ Zhī Luàn).
The rebellion began in 755 CE and caused enormous destruction throughout the Tang Empire. Cities were damaged, millions of people suffered, and many families were separated.
Du Fu personally experienced the chaos of this period. He was captured by rebel forces, escaped, and later became a government official.
Because he witnessed war and social problems directly, his poetry contains detailed descriptions of the suffering of ordinary people.
This is why later generations called him the “Poet Historian” (诗史, shī shǐ). His poems preserve memories of an important historical period.
Example sentences:
战争改变了很多人的生活。(zhàn zhēng gǎi biàn le hěn duō rén de shēng huó)- War changed the lives of many people.
历史记录过去发生的事情。(lì shǐ jì lù guò qù fā shēng de shì qíng)- History records things that happened in the past.
杜甫亲眼看到了战争的影响。(Dù Fǔ qīn yǎn kàn dào le zhàn zhēng de yǐng xiǎng)- Du Fu personally saw the effects of war.
Why Du Fu Is Called the Poet Historian
Du Fu received the title Poet Historian because his poems describe real events and real emotions.
Many ancient poems focus mainly on beauty, nature, or personal feelings. Du Fu’s works also include these elements, but he paid special attention to society.
He wrote about hungry families, exhausted soldiers, poor farmers, and people suffering during war.
His poetry shows compassion (同情, tóng qíng) and responsibility. He did not ignore social problems. Instead, he used poetry to express concern for humanity.
Example sentences:
杜甫关心普通人的生活。(Dù Fǔ guān xīn pǔ tōng rén de shēng huó)- Du Fu cared about ordinary people’s lives.
他的诗有深刻的社会意义。(tā de shī yǒu shēn kè de shè huì yì yì)- His poems have deep social meaning.
诗歌可以记录历史。(shī gē kě yǐ jì lù lì shǐ)- Poetry can record history.
Spring View: A Poem About War and Homesickness
One of Du Fu’s most famous poems is Spring View (春望, Chūn Wàng).
Original poem:
国破山河在,
城春草木深。
感时花溅泪,
恨别鸟惊心。
Pinyin:
Guó pò shān hé zài,
Chéng chūn cǎo mù shēn.
Gǎn shí huā jiàn lèi,
Hèn bié niǎo jīng xīn.
English translation:
The country is broken, but mountains and rivers remain.
Spring comes to the city, where grass and trees grow thick.
Moved by the times, flowers bring tears.
Hating separation, birds make the heart ache.
This poem creates a powerful contrast. Nature continues to grow beautifully, but human society is suffering.
The flowers and birds, normally symbols of happiness, become reminders of sadness because of the difficult situation.
Example sentences:
虽然春天很美,但是战争带来了痛苦。(suī rán chūn tiān hěn měi, dàn shì zhàn zhēng dài lái le tòng kǔ)- Although spring is beautiful, war brings suffering.
人们希望世界和平。(rén men xī wàng shì jiè hé píng)- People hope for world peace.
离别让人感到伤心。(lí bié ràng rén gǎn dào shāng xīn)- Separation makes people feel sad.
The Famous Poem: Song of the War Carts
Another important work by Du Fu is Song of the War Carts (兵车行, Bīng Chē Xíng).
This poem describes soldiers being forced to leave their families and go to war.
Du Fu does not glorify war. Instead, he focuses on the pain experienced by ordinary people.
Through detailed descriptions, readers can imagine the sadness of parents saying goodbye to their children and wives separating from their husbands.
This human-centered approach made Du Fu different from many poets of his time.
Example sentences:
战争让很多家庭分离。(zhàn zhēng ràng hěn duō jiā tíng fēn lí)- War separates many families.
士兵离开自己的家乡。(shì bīng lí kāi zì jǐ de jiā xiāng)- Soldiers leave their hometowns.
和平是所有人的愿望。(hé píng shì suǒ yǒu rén de yuàn wàng)- Peace is everyone’s wish.
Du Fu’s Concern for Ordinary People
One of Du Fu’s greatest qualities was his empathy for people from all social classes.
He wrote about farmers, refugees, soldiers, and poor families.
In his famous poem The Thatched House Destroyed by the Autumn Wind (茅屋为秋风所破歌, Máo Wū Wéi Qiū Fēng Suǒ Pò Gē), Du Fu describes his own damaged house but then expresses concern for all poor people in the world.
The most famous lines are:
安得广厦千万间,大庇天下寒士俱欢颜。
The meaning is:
“How can I obtain thousands of spacious houses to shelter all poor scholars and make them smile?”
These lines show that Du Fu’s concern went beyond his own suffering.
Example sentences:
他不仅关心自己,也关心别人。(tā bù jǐn guān xīn zì jǐ, yě guān xīn bié rén)- He cared not only about himself but also about others.
帮助别人是一种美德。(bāng zhù bié rén shì yì zhǒng měi dé)- Helping others is a virtue.
善良的人会关心社会。(shàn liáng de rén huì guān xīn shè huì)- Kind people care about society.
Du Fu’s Writing Style
Du Fu’s poetry is known for careful structure, deep emotions, and powerful descriptions.
He mastered regulated verse (律诗, lǜ shī), a strict poetic form developed during the Tang Dynasty.
Unlike some poets who focused on spontaneous inspiration, Du Fu carefully revised his works. He paid attention to every character and every line.
His poems often combine personal emotions with broader social concerns.
A poem about his own family separation may also express the feelings of countless other families.
Example sentences:

他的语言准确而有力量。(tā de yǔ yán zhǔn què ér yǒu lì liang)- His language is precise and powerful.

Du Fu Compared with Li Bai
Li Bai and Du Fu are often considered the two greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty, but their styles are very different.
Li Bai represents imagination, freedom, and romance. His poems often feel like dreams.
Du Fu represents responsibility, realism, and compassion. His poems often feel like historical documents.
Li Bai looks at the sky and dreams of traveling among the stars.
Du Fu looks at society and worries about people suffering on earth.
Both poets are important because they show different aspects of human experience.
